One Room Challenge Week 4: Coastal Charm Great Room

Happy Saturday, and I am happy to say we are all finally moved in! Today I decided to celebrate by taking the girls to the Phoenix Home and Garden show, to see our favorite twins, "The Property Brothers". It just happens to be the brothers' birthday weekend, so it truly was a treat for me and the girls. Even though the show was only about 45 minutes, I learned quite a bit about, buying, selling, and remodeling a house; not to mention they are really tall in real life.  Their energy was such an inspiration to keep pushing me to put this room all together.

Onto the Week 4 progress for our Great room. The spring pillows are being made. We've picked out the rug and the carpet runners, picked out lamps, and the coffee table. Today I am showing you the handpainted French end table Part 1, I have finished so far. It will be completed by Week 6. Here are a couple sneek shots.

 

 

Before: I think my sister in law, was going to paint it aqua, and just decided she didn't like it. I love the how the table is turning out!

 

 

Here she is, all painted, for the first time I think I did a pretty good job, because I didn't have any luck with the reverse transfer. One tutorial, said to just spritz the table with water, before I put down my reverse transfer, and then spray the reverse transfer with water; then use a credit card to smooth out the paper, and transfer the ink onto the table. Nothing happened. No ink running, no ink transfer at all! Any one have any guesses why it didn't work? I did get better results, not perfect, it does need  a few touch ups. I followed this video for the how to, but in a later posts, I'll give you how I tweaked little bits here and there. I used this graphic from The Graphics Fairy, and I haven't quite decided, because if you haven't noticed, this table is WHITE! Around the edges I either want to handpaint roses or hydrangeas...Which shall it be?

Just for the record, I wouldn't paint all furniture. I think wood is gorgeous on it's own. The twin to this end table, I have plans that include, having my husband make a real wood top, painting only the body of the table, and transferring an image on top. Also, I have pieces of furniture pieces from my Great-Grandmother and Nana, that I would never paint either.

For me, the paint and the transfer give this end table some character and accent it's style!
 Just thought I'd let you know.

 

 

 

 

The video with the tutorial that helped with the transfer is this one. He uses this technique to write names on walls. Pretty cool! Think I am going to try this in the girls' rooms.

Follow Friday 20: Taking a Walk on the Creative Side

Good morning! I hope your week has gone well! It is an absolute beautiful, true to April showers kind of day here in Arizona. It's been raining on and off again all morning, which is wonderfully refreshing, after the heat wave of 90F weather, we had for the last week or so! We did get all moved in finally! Now, I am busily unpacking the stacks of boxes, trying to organize my kitchen, and simply enjoying the new house. For Earth Day, Lindsay and I started planting seeds to put out in the back yard. Tomorrow is the Home and Garden show in Phoenix, and I am so excited to (if we can get in, the even is limited to the first 2000 people) go see Jonathan and Drew Scott, of The Property Brothers that airs on HGTV! I love how they can transform the ugliest eye sore of a house, into someone's dream home! I am also working on a couple projects for my One Room Challenge, and it is really starting to be a challenge this week, with really moving. The reverse transfer on my end table did not work out at all, so I am going to try another type of transfer method, and I am starting my Gallery Walls, there will actually be two in my Great Room.

I wait all week for this day! Friday Follow's are one of my favorite post, because I hope it helps you to find new and inspiring blogs to follow! Thanks to Pinterest and Instagram their Inspiration gave me so many ideas, with too many being my favorites, that  I would really love to share them all with you. I just don't want to take up all of your time, so here are a couple to spread the love and inspiration!

House of Figs

 

I am in love with this Playroom she created. Reminds me of the time we were moving, and I couldn't find my oldest daughter at the time she was probably 3 or 4. As I was setting her room up, I found where she had been hiding under her bed and coloring rainbows on the underside of her mattress. To this day, she is still painting, creating, photographing, beautiful works of art, (and I am not saying that just because I'm her momma). It just blows me away how creative my daughter is, and how artistically challenged her mother is (that's me)!!

With Summer around the corner, and when the nights cool off, I like to sit outside, not only because I've been in the house all day, and I enjoy the refreshing night air, but also to gaze up at the moon and stars. Where we live, it's about 30 minutes away from the city, and  our new neighborhood, doesn't have any street lights, so I imagine the Summer nights in my back yard with these glowing near the patio. I thought these DIY lanterns were sheer genious and I can't wait to make some for my back yard!

Celebrating Earth Day 2015

 

Happy Earth day! Thanks to a dear blogging friend, Lori Leigh, of LL Farm for reminding me today is Earth day! We've all heard that the Earth is suffering, and needs all of us to find ways to help make the world a better place for our children. It was about this same time last year, when our Sustainable cooking class, showed this video, The End of the Line (this is the trailer)! What shocked me most, was the simple fact, how unaware I was, and I thought how many of us are there that are still unaware! Almost ten years ago, I worked for a seafood restaurant, and it was unbelievable to me at the time, that we started taking seafood plates off the menu, because certain fish were endangered; like Atlantic Halibut, Grouper and the Bluefin Tuna! After watching this powerful and moving video, I began to understand, if we don't start taking care of our planet now, what will our children have to sustain themselves.

 

Growing up, I have fond memories, of skipping and playing around my mother's flower garden, and on the weekends, watch her toiling away at the earth, as she planted, weeded, fertilized, and watered her vegetable garden. I learned many things from my mother about gardening, but for some unknown reason, until recently, I seriously had a black thumb. Everything I planted died.

 

That is until I bought, my youngest daughter Lindsay her first tomato plant. Living here in Arizona, it is quite challenging to grow anything, especially in the Summer time, but I have been reading up and learning ways to tend to a garden. 

 

To celebrate Earth day this year, Lindsay and I planted

 

Lime Basil

Cosmos and

Salvia.

 

 

 

The Lime basil and the Salvia, I know do well in a hot weather climate.

We will see how the Cosmos grows. 

 



Lime Basil (O. americanum)

 

Zesty lime flavor and aroma. Delicious in salads, salsa, and fish and chicken dishes. Compact, mounding plants average 20" in height. More heat tolerant than sweet basil. Annual. What interested me, was that as it started getting really hot, when my sweet basil started to dye, this Lime Basil, started to grow, the hotter it got  outside; the more it grew! Of course, I did give it a little shade, but it did get full sun, most of the day!

 

 

Salvia 'Early Bonfire'

 

Annual.  Shows brilliant spikes of red, tubular flowers surrounded by lush green foliage. 'Early Bonfire' is tall, making it ideal for filling garden spaces and borders. A large planting creates a stunning impact that’s impossible to miss. Early Bonfire is a tender perennial usually grown as an annual that blooms up until frost. Perennial in USDA zones 10 and 11.

 

One late Spring, when I planted Salvia, it also thrived in the heat, well (here in Arizona, it does get cold for a couple weeks out of the year) into the middle of November, when temperatures started to drop.

 

 

Cosmos 'Sea Shells'

 

Annual. This charming cosmos with fluted seashell-shaped petals, will be a beautiful addition to your cosmos patch! In shades of white, pink, rose and crimson, it makes an excellent cut flower. Easy to care for; once established they are drought tolerant, preferring neglect to T.L.C. (tender loving care), making them a perfect choice for wildflower or naturalized areas.

 

This is going to be interesting to find out just how drought tolerant they are, and if it really does prefer to be neglected. Won't be too hard to do here in the Summertime!

 

When I lived in California, there was a field of Comos, standing tall with their romantic display in the gardens of a resort I was working at. On my way to my car, I would stop for a moment or two and admire, the way they would sway in a breeze. How beautiful and sunny their pale petals, showed their softer side!

because *Potential food shortages, because of drought, soil depletion, and the plunge in wildlife population, example bees, bats and other birds; over fishing of life in our oceans.
